(Philadelphia, PA) — Chartwell welcomes John J. (Jack) Phelan IV as a partner in its New York office. Jack brings a medical malpractice defense practice and a record of taking cases to verdict across New York State, adding extensive trial experience for clients facing professional liability and other civil claims.
Jack represents medical professionals and insured defendants, working with carriers and self-insured organizations to shape the defense of each matter. His experience includes trial preparation, complex motions, and appellate advocacy, allowing him to consider how decisions made early in a case may affect proceedings through trial and appeal.
“Jack understands that a strong defense takes shape long before anyone enters the courtroom,” said Chartwell Partner George Kolbe. “His trial experience and attention to the details that drive a case will be highly valuable to our clients. We’re excited to welcome him to the team.”
Jack has conducted and defended more than 300 depositions, building an extensive foundation in examining witnesses and developing the factual record in medical malpractice and other civil disputes. He also advises on insurance coverage and has handled matters involving premises and products liability, motor vehicle accidents, New York Labor Law, pharmaceutical malpractice, risk transfer, and discrimination.
His court experience includes appearances throughout New York’s state court system, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of New York, and the Appellate Division’s First and Second Departments.
Jack graduated magna cum laude from Albany Law School, where he was executive editor of the Albany Law Review. His published scholarship examined the federal assault weapons ban and the Second Amendment. Before law school, he earned recognition as a two-time Division III Football All-American at Hartwick College, which later inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame.
