Chartwell Partner Isis Davidson Featured in the New York Law Journal

We are proud to share that Isis Davidson, Partner in our New York office, was recently published in the New York Law Journal for her article, “Why the CROWN Act Matters—And Why It’s Personal.” In this powerful essay, Isis discusses the lived reality of hair-based discrimination faced by Black Americans—particularly Black women—and explains why the CROWN Act, now enacted in 27 states and Washington, D.C., is essential for protecting not just hair, but dignity and cultural identity.

Drawing from her own experiences as a Black attorney, Isis reflects on moments of bias in professional and legal settings and calls on employers, educators, and policymakers to examine how standards of “professionalism” have historically excluded or policed Black identity.

“The CROWN Act is about more than hair. It’s about equity and the right to show up fully and freely.”
