James Theodore Hankins III is an experienced trial attorney who focuses his practice on civil litigation, including premises liability, general negligence, negligent security, and transportation-related claims. He represents insurers and national retailers in high-exposure matters, handling all aspects of litigation from initial case evaluation through trial and appeal.
James brings extensive first-chair trial experience and a business-minded approach to his practice. He regularly evaluates liability and exposure, develops case strategy, drafts and argues dispositive motions, and takes and defends depositions. He also advises insurers on policy limit demands, providing guidance on exposure analysis and settlement strategy.
In addition to his litigation work, James partners closely with clients on risk management and regulatory compliance issues. He works with governmental authorities to address and resolve code compliance matters and frequently provides training to clients on emerging legal issues and industry trends. His practice is particularly focused on defending national retailers and commercial entities in complex, multi-faceted claims.
James has a strong track record of delivering results, including numerous successful summary judgment rulings in both state and federal courts. He also plays a leadership role in managing litigation teams and driving client relationships, with a consistent history of significant business generation and team performance.
Before entering private practice, James served as a Staff Attorney for a Georgia state court, where he gained valuable insight into judicial decision-making and case management.
James earned his J.D., cum laude, from University of Georgia School of Law and his B.A., cum laude, in Political Science from University of Georgia.
He is admitted to practice in Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama and is an active member of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association and the National Retail and Restaurant Defense Association, where he serves on the planning and membership committees. A frequent speaker, James presents on topics such as the biomechanics of slip, trip, and fall incidents and regularly conducts client training programs.
Outside of his practice, James enjoys golfing and coaching his daughters’ sports teams.
