EDUCATION

Emory University School of Law

Kevin Alan Spainhour represents clients in complex civil litigation, with an emphasis on construction defect matters and a background in medical malpractice and general liability defense. Drawing on extensive litigation experience and prior work in government investigations, he helps clients evaluate high-exposure claims and develop defense strategies aligned with their legal and business objectives.

Kevin’s litigation experience encompasses professional liability, product liability, toxic torts, and premises liability, as well as serious and catastrophic medical malpractice claims. He has managed substantial caseloads and conducted pre-suit and in-suit investigations. This experience informs his approach to evaluating claims and developing defense strategies tailored to his clients’ objectives.

Before joining Chartwell, Kevin served as Legal Unit Manager in the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Office of Inspector General. He represented the Department in fraud, waste, and abuse investigations involving administrative, regulatory, and legal violations. He also reviewed and drafted contracts affecting the Office of Inspector General and researched, interpreted, and drafted statutes, rules, and regulations affecting the Department’s Medicaid and State Health Benefit operations.

Kevin’s health care practice has included advising medical and pharmaceutical providers on government investigations and compliance with federal and state requirements. He has represented hospitals and behavioral health facilities and counseled pharmacies, outpatient surgery centers, and physicians on risk reduction, quality improvement, and policy development. His pharmacy work has included representation before state boards and advice on asset sales and purchases, including transactions involving federal consent decree orders.

Before entering the legal profession, Kevin worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as a staff nurse, extracorporeal life support specialist, and paramedic supervisor. That clinical background informs his understanding of injury claims and the operational demands facing health care providers.

Kevin earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law, where he served as executive symposium editor of the Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal and received the G. Conley Ingram Scholarship. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kennesaw State University and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Georgia Highlands College.
