Susan Cartwright brings more than three decades of litigation experience to Chartwell, with a distinguished career centered on insurance defense, complex tort matters, and claims involving considerable risk. She has served as both in-house trial counsel and managing attorney for major national insurance carriers, overseeing attorneys and staff across multiple offices while maintaining an active trial docket. A seasoned first-chair trial lawyer, Susan has tried more than 75 jury trials to verdict—an accomplishment that places her in rare company among civil litigators.
Susan’s practice spans a wide range of civil litigation, including personal injury defense, premises liability, automobile and trucking liability, construction defect, products liability, commercial vehicle disputes, motor carrier matters, and property damage claims. Her extensive in-house background gives her a deep understanding of claims evaluation, risk exposure, reserving, expert retention, and trial strategy. She has also served as a trusted resource to claims personnel, providing training, case assessments, and litigation guidance on files of varying complexity.
Most recently, Susan served as in-house counsel for a global insurance group, managing product liability litigation across North America and coordinating all aspects of claim handling—from early liability assessments and reserve analysis to settlement negotiations and technical strategy.
Throughout her career, Susan has been recognized for her leadership, her ability to manage high-volume and high-stakes dockets, and her consistent, results-driven approach in the courtroom. She is admitted to the Texas and Georgia bars and is an active member of both state bar associations as well as the Dallas Bar Association.
Susan earned her J.D. from the University of Houston School of Law and her B.S. in Journalism from the University of Florida.
When she is not at the office, Susan loves to spend time with her family, obsess over Southeastern Conference football, and continue in her never-ending quest to find the best barbecue in Texas.
