(Philadelphia, PA) — Chartwell welcomes Ellen King back to the firm as a partner focusing on civil litigation and insurance coverage matters. Ellen returns after serving as a complex claims director, bringing an insurer’s perspective on the decisions that arise when substantial exposure and disputed coverage complicate a claim.

Having worked both as litigation counsel and on the insurer side, Ellen understands how the work of defending a case connects to the broader responsibility of managing a claim. Her experience offers clients insight into how developing evidence can change an exposure assessment and when settlement may warrant a closer look.

“Welcoming a former colleague back is especially rewarding,” said David Brosnihan, partner. “Ellen knows our firm and the relationships at the heart of our work. We’re excited to have her return with new experience and to continue building those relationships together.”

As a complex claims director, Ellen oversaw third-party professional liability matters involving substantial potential losses and worked with outside counsel to guide litigation. Her responsibilities extended beyond legal strategy to coverage determinations and financial reserves. She participated in mediations and trials, led settlement discussions, and presented significant matters to senior management.

At Chartwell, Ellen’s work will include defending liability claims and advising clients on policy interpretation and coverage disputes. Her approach draws on her claims experience to connect the details of a case with the practical decisions clients must make throughout its defense. She also brings experience supervising legal teams and maintaining close communication with clients and adjusters as matters progress.

Ellen earned her J.D., cum laude, from New England Law | Boston, where she served as an editor of the New England Law Review. She holds a B.A. in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of Rhode Island. She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Massachusetts and Connecticut.‍
