Eric Gruetzner has spent more than two decades on both sides of the Texas trial docket. Early in his career, he built plaintiffs' cases before transitioning to the defense, where he now takes them apart. He defends premises, products, transportation, and commercial auto claims for national carriers, manufacturers, retailers, restaurant and hospitality operators, fleet owners, and construction suppliers, with a concentration in catastrophic injury and wrongful death matters involving eight-figure exposure.
Eric is a trial lawyer in the literal sense. He has tried cases to verdict before juries and to the bench, in both state and federal courts, for plaintiffs and defendants. That record shapes how he handles files that never reach a courtroom: cases genuinely prepared for trial settle differently, and opposing counsel calibrate their demands to the lawyer across the table. He has taken multimillion-dollar demands off carriers' books on no-negligence and lack-of-notice grounds, obtained summary judgment in premises matters where plaintiffs could not establish notice, and resolved matters within authority during voir dire after plaintiffs' theories failed under trial-ready scrutiny. He has also handled multiple appeals, with favorable outcomes.
Carriers working with Eric receive early, candid case assessments rather than optimistic ones. He teaches written client reporting to his firm's associates because reserve accuracy depends on it, and he staffs matters with the level of leverage each file actually requires, supervising associates and support staff rather than handling every task himself.
He speaks to the insurance industry on nuclear verdicts, most recently before the Houston chapter of the CPCU Society, and defends cases accordingly by identifying anchoring, reptile, and corporate-conduct themes early and preparing corporate representatives to withstand them. Eric also advises carriers on coverage under business and consumer policies, conducts Examinations Under Oath, and drafts coverage opinions for carrier reliance. He practices in Texas state courts and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Northern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas and has handled catastrophic injury matters in Louisiana state and federal courts.
Eric earned his Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University School of Law (formerly Texas Wesleyan School of Law), where he was named to the Dean's List and was inducted into the Order of Barristers. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Texas A&M University.
